Eight people have died and 20 others were injured after a passenger bus collided with a truck and a car in Türkiye’s northwestern province of Canakkale on Saturday, local authorities confirmed.
Canakkale Governor Omer Toraman said in a press briefing that the accident occurred when a truck overturned and crossed into the opposite lane, colliding head-on with an oncoming passenger bus and striking a car.
According to Toraman, among the deceased were the truck driver and seven bus passengers. Emergency services responded swiftly, transporting the 20 injured—some in critical condition—to nearby hospitals for treatment.
The precise cause of the accident has not yet been established, according to WAM.
Türkiye’s Justice Minister Yilmaz Tunc stated that a judicial investigation is underway, with two public prosecutors already assigned to determine the circumstances and responsibilities surrounding the incident.
The investigation continues as authorities examine the factors contributing to the collision.
The accident is the second serious bus accident this month in Türkiye. Another collision between two metrobuses at Haramidere station in Istanbul, Türkiye which was reported on May 10 resulted in the death of a 37-year-old woman and left approximately 40 others injured.
