Made in Egypt: GM Egypt celebrates the roll-out of its millionth car

"Our vision is to position GM Egypt as a regional export hub, strengthening our presence across these markets"

General Motors (GM) Egypt has made automotive history, becoming the first car manufacturer in Egypt to produce one million locally made vehicles.

GM Egypt, founded in 1983, has played a key role in shaping the nation’s automotive industry by adhering to international quality standards while creating thousands of jobs. Over the past four decades, the company has bolstered the local automotive supplier network and strengthened public-private partnerships as it aims to transform Egypt into a regional export hub for GM.

Sharon Nishi, Chair and Managing Director of GM Egypt and North Africa, said, “General Motors Egypt has made significant contributions to the country’s economy over the last 40 years. With over $530 million in investments, we’ve expanded our manufacturing capabilities, and in the past decade alone, we’ve integrated advanced robotics and automation, cementing our position as Egypt’s most technologically advanced auto plant.”

The millionth vehicle off the production line was the Chevrolet T-Series pickup, affectionately known as “The Dababbah.” This popular model, widely regarded as a workhorse for commercial use, has become an iconic vehicle in Egypt, with more than half a million units produced locally. Notably, 60% of the vehicle’s components are sourced from GM’s network of 78 local suppliers, underscoring the company’s investment in the domestic economy.

Nishi added, “The Dababbah has been integral to the growth of small and medium-sized enterprises in Egypt, providing a reliable transportation solution that has supported economic development for decades.”

GM Egypt also announced plans to produce the all-new 2025 Chevrolet Optra sedan as part of its collaboration with the Egyptian government under the Automotive Industry Development Program (AIDP). The Optra will be the first vehicle registered under the AIDP, further solidifying GM’s role in advancing Egypt’s automotive industry. The new sedan is expected to hit showrooms in early 2025.

Jack Uppal, President and Managing Director of GM Africa and Middle East, reiterated GM’s broader ambitions, stating, “Africa and the Middle East are key regions for GM’s global growth strategy. Our vision is to position GM Egypt as a regional export hub, strengthening our presence across these markets.”.
