MAN’s TGE van gains expanded safety technology for 2027 model year

MAN targets the most challenging scenarios faced by van operators in urban and delivery environments with new driver assistance functions across the 2027 TGE range

MAN Truck & Bus is expanding the active safety package of its MAN TGE van for model year 2027, adding new driver assistance technology and extending the capabilities of existing systems.

The latest changes are aimed particularly at situations encountered during delivery operations and urban driving, where frequent junctions, vulnerable road users, changing traffic conditions and driver workload can increase the potential for incidents. The updated systems are designed to provide drivers with earlier warnings, improved awareness of surrounding traffic and, where appropriate, automated braking intervention.

Production of the model year 2027 MAN TGE is scheduled to begin in early September at MAN’s plant in Września, Poland.

“With model year 2027, we are noticeably increasing active safety in the MAN TGE once again. Our assistance systems support the driver exactly where the risk of accidents is highest,” summarises Martin Imhoff, Head of Product Marketing & Product Management Van at MAN Truck & Bus.

For fleet operators, the updates add another layer of technology aimed at supporting drivers in the environments where light commercial vehicles spend much of their working lives. The emphasis is not only on preventing collisions, but also on making the vehicle’s responses and warnings more predictable for the driver.

Junction assist targets complex urban traffic

One of the headline additions for the 2027 model year is junction assist, a system designed to address the risks associated with crossing traffic at junctions.

Within the operating limits of the technology, the system monitors for crossing traffic as the TGE approaches or enters a junction. If a potential collision is detected, it can provide an early warning to the driver and, where the system identifies an acute collision risk, apply the brakes automatically.

MAN has also introduced a multi-stage warning strategy. Rather than relying on a single intervention, the system progressively alerts the driver as the situation develops. This is intended to give the driver greater visibility of the developing hazard while allowing the vehicle to intervene when required.

For operators working in dense urban environments, where delivery vans can encounter complex junction layouts repeatedly throughout a shift, the technology is intended to provide additional support during one of the more demanding parts of the driving cycle.

Improved fatigue and attention monitoring

MAN is also upgrading the TGE’s ability to identify signs of driver fatigue and distraction.

A multifunction camera positioned within the interior mirror monitors indicators such as gaze behaviour and eye activity. Using this information, the system can identify signs that may indicate reduced driver attention or fatigue and provide targeted warnings.

The technology is designed to assess abstract driver states rather than retain identifiable personal information. MAN says that no personal data is stored as part of the function.

Importantly for fleet buyers, attention and fatigue detection will become standard equipment across the TGE. This makes the technology part of the vehicle’s core safety specification rather than an additional function limited to selected configurations.

The move also reflects the operational reality of commercial van driving, where vehicles may spend long periods on the road and drivers can face demanding schedules, frequent stops and changing traffic conditions.

Predictive ACC adds navigation data

MAN is also developing the TGE’s existing Adaptive Cruise Control (ACC), with predictive speed adjustment being introduced for N1 vehicles up to 3.5t GVW.

The upgraded system combines several sources of information to determine whether the vehicle should adjust its speed ahead of changing road conditions. These include navigation data, traffic information and camera-based recognition of road signs.

This allows the system to anticipate features such as bends, changes to speed limits and junctions rather than simply responding to them once the vehicle reaches them.

For drivers, the intended result is a more consistent driving experience, with fewer unnecessary braking events and smoother speed transitions. For fleets, the technology is also positioned as a way of reducing the physical demands placed on drivers and the vehicle during everyday operation.

The predictive function therefore extends the role of ACC beyond maintaining a set distance from traffic ahead. By incorporating information about the road further ahead, the system can make speed adjustments before the driver reaches a known change in the route.

Expansion of MAN’s safety strategy in 2027 range

The 2027 model year updates represent a further expansion of the MAN TGE’s active safety strategy, with the latest technology focused on collision risks and driver workload encountered during everyday commercial vehicle operations.

Junction assist provides additional support when crossing traffic creates a potential collision risk, while the enhanced fatigue and attention monitoring system is designed to identify signs of reduced driver alertness. Predictive ACC, meanwhile, uses navigation, traffic and camera information to anticipate upcoming road conditions and adjust speed accordingly.

With production of the updated TGE beginning in September at Września, MAN is positioning the latest model around a broader package of assistance technologies designed to support drivers while maintaining the TGE’s role as a working vehicle for delivery, logistics and urban applications.
