RTA outfits multi-storey car park with solar panels

Dubai’s Road and Transport Authority (RTA) has announced that it has finished installing solar panels on the roof of a multi-storey car-park at its headquarters in Umm Ramool.

The project was undertaken in collaboration with the Dubai Carbon Centre of Excellence (DCCE), and is part of the RTA’s commitment to promoting the use of sustainable energy, and in line with the Dubai Government’s clean energy initiative.

“RTA has installed 867 solar panels above the multistorey car-park at our headquarters. Each panel has a capacity of 330-watts, and the overall production amounts to 286.11KW. The system is linked to the main power grid of the Dubai Electricity and Water Authority (DEWA). The production of renewable energy is expected to be in excess of 443 kW/h, which will cut carbon emissions associated with the conventional power generation,” said Abdul Rahman Al Janahi, the director of Buildings & Facilities unit at the RTA.

According to a statement, the project will lower carbon emissions by 192 tons per annum and will reduce the monthly electricity consumption bill by 5%. The project is said to be part of a 20-year agreement with the DCCE to supply the building with clean energy, in line with Shams Dubai.

“The project is also part of RTA’s strategic plan aligned with the Dubai Government’s initiative themed (Green Economy for Sustainable Development). The initiative has six pillars: Green Energy, Government Policies, Green City, Tackling Climate Change, Technology and Green Technology. The Green Economy concept has become a reality featuring in RTA’s agenda for buildings, facilities and services to the public. The RTA is the first government entity to endorse a plan for preparing and implementing a plan for the governance of the Green Economy,” Al Janahi pointed out.
