Tadweer recycles in excess of 1.2mn tonnes of construction and demolition waste

Aggregate has been used in the construction of several landmarks and projects including the Louvre Museum - Abu Dhabi and Etihad Rail project

The Abu Dhabi Waste Management Center (Tadweer) says it has increased its efforts to recycle construction and demolition (C&D) waste. The move is said to be part of a strategic plan to implement a world-class waste management system in the emirate.

According to a statement, the move is also part of Tadweer’s commitment to implementing the Abu Dhabi Executive Council’s resolution that mandates the use of a minimum quantity of 40% recycled material in different road and construction projects across the emirate.

The firm states that it has received 1,808,291 tonnes of C&D waste from the Abu Dhabi region in the last year, which accounts for 26% of the total waste handled by its facilities. Of this amount, the centre is said to have recycled 1,236,814 tonnes, 70% of the total R&D waste collected from the region. The amount is said to be the equivalent of 149 domes of Louvre Museum in Abu Dhabi.

Tadweer’s C&D waste recycling facility is location on Hameem Road in Abu Dhabi and boasts a processing capacity of 8000 tonnes of C&D waste per day. The facility can produce four different sizes of recycled aggregate and sand for use in the construction of infrastructure projects.

“Tadweer’s efforts to recycle construction and demolition waste across Abu Dhabi has significantly contributed to achieving the emirate’s recycling targets. The facility has become a major source of raw materials for major construction projects in the emirate,” explained Tadweer general manager Dr Salem Al Kaabi.

According to Al Kaabi, Tadweer’s strategy is focused on the development of innovative solutions for the effective management of waste in an eco-friendly manner. He added, “This strategy allows the emirate to reduce pollution and protect its environment for future generations in line with its sustainable development agenda.”

Since 2010, the facility is said to have produced 13,842,072 tons of recycled aggregate from C&D waste, enough to produce a 5,300km long road.
