Terex extends maximum jib length with new luffer tower crane

Terex Cranes has introduced its new luffing jib tower crane, the Terex CTL 272-18, with a maximum jib length of 61m, a 10% increase over the previous class model.

The new Terex model features a 270 ton-metre load moment and maximum full-length load of 2.6t. According to Terex, a unique feature of the crane is Terex Power Plus, which can temporarily increase the maximum load moment by 10% under specific and controlled conditions, such as reduced dynamics, giving the operator extra lifting capacity.

Seven different jib configurations from 30 to 61m are available on the on the new model to give contractors the flexibility to meet a range of jobsite reach needs, said a statement from the company. Equipped with an independent safety line, all jib sections of the new CTL 272-18 deliver safe work at height. The jib walkways are also galvanised for durability. The crane’s 5.8m counter jib has multiple angles to meet various in-service and out-of-service conditions.

Massimo Cappello, director of Product Management for Terex Tower Cranes, said: “We are extremely excited about our new Terex CTL 272-18 tower crane, which is just the latest in a string of recent new model introductions across our hammerhead, flat top and luffing jib offerings. We worked closely with customers to include the features they need and the flexibility to meet more congested and complex building environments. Its adaptable control system gives operators the choice of operating modes to efficiently and precisely position heavy loads, and the crane is built ready to quickly accept advanced options that boost productivity and reporting capabilities.”

The new control system on the CTL 272-18 is equipped with a seven-inch antiglare colour screen displaying operating and troubleshooting data to the operator. The Terex Power Match feature enables the operator to choose between operating performance or energy efficiency to adapt to lifting needs. The new crane offers the choice of hoisting with 1-4 pull lines, affording the flexibility to choose between lifting speed with lighter loads or power and precision when placing heavier objects. Its auto-leveling feature automatically maintains the same hoist block height while luffing the jib.

When it comes to assembly, the CTL 272-18 offers a maximum freestanding height of 84.4m. The flexible tower design can be configured using a combination of the 1.9m H20, 2.3m HD23 and the 2.37m TS212 tower masts, allowing customers to manage tower section inventory and cost-effectively meet tower needs at multiple sites. Tower masts are equipped with aluminum ladders and optimised for transportation to the job site.

Terex’s statement added that the new cabin on the CTL 272-18 includes a fully-adjustable seat, while the joystick controls feature a short stroke length to reduce arm movements and operator fatigue. Heating and air conditioning are standard and large windows give the operator a panoramic view of the jobsite for excellent visibility. In the event of a broken glass pane during operation, it can be replaced from the inside.

The crane is compatible for the next generation of Terex tower telematics to report machine operation and service data back to the office.
