Dubai Holdings and Emaar Properties announce 600ha Dubai Square megaproject

Dubai Square, a new six square kilometre retail megaproject in Dubai Creek Harbour, has been announced by Emaar Properties and Dubai Holding.

The project, which aims to ‘push the boundaries of modern retail and leisure by drawing on next-generation technology’, will be adjacent to the Dubai Creek Tower and will represent a 2.6 million sqm retail, hospitality and residential destination.

According to a statement by the developers, the project – which is 10 minutes away from Dubai International Airport and the Burj Khalifa – will ‘blur the boundaries of online and in-mall shopping, integrating the indoors and the outdoors’.

The statement added that ‘Dubai Square is designed for the new era of tech-savvy customers, setting a benchmark for retail experiences in the 21st century’.

“Focused on the aspirations of the new generation of customers, Dubai Square will play a pivotal role in further establishing Dubai as the next champion of global retail. With omnichannel offering, it delivers a new destination experience that will bring incredible value to our retail partners. It will be the closest mega-retail district to millions of passengers passing through the Dubai International Airport, serving over 2.5 billion people who are only 4 hours flying time from Dubai,” said Mohamed Alabbar, chairman of Emaar Properties.

Dubai Square is set to have an eclectic mix of styles and references, with the project also home to the Middle East’s largest ‘Chinatown’.

The size of more than 100 football pitches – with 75,000sqm of gross floor retail space – the project will have three levels, each representing a different set of experiences to customers, the statement added. The ground floor will feature an events arena, while the first floor will have a four-lane boulevard housing luxury retail, dining and leisure outlets. The second floor will be designed to be a ‘family-friendly’ area, featuring a range of activities, including an ‘Ice Adventure’ and a cineplex, waterpark and sports arena. It will also house a supermarket and a metro link.

Furthermore, the project will also contain a ‘futuristic entertainment arena with 3D-projection mapping, theatrical sound and lighting, and a vast choice of global gastronomy’ as part of its additional attractions, along with an Art District, the statement concluded.
