SAF-HOLLAND: From transporter to technology pioneer

From electrification to new drive technologies – the energy transition creates a radical transformation within commercial vehicles

At Transpotec Logitec, SAF-HOLLAND showed pioneering solutions for the key issues of the mobility transition in the commercial vehicles sector. At the industry exhibition in Milan, SAF-HOLLAND, Haldex and Tecma Srl had their first joint presentation as part of the same group of companies.

From electrification to integration of new drive technologies – the energy transition creates a radical transformation within the commercial vehicles industry. “Electromobility, digitalization, connectivity, sustainability and safety: The challenges in the transport industry are complex,” says Cristiano Sturaro, Managing Director of SAF-HOLLAND Italia.

“In times of change, trade fairs are particularly relevant. At the pulse of the industry, they combine exciting discourse, innovations and new ways of thinking. We are proud to be an initiator and driver of the current transition as one of the leading manufacturers for the commercial vehicles industry.”

In addition to the special axle systems and different fifth wheels, the SAF INTRA castor steering axle and the SAF TRAKr electrical regenerative braking axle were very popular with the trade fair visitors.

For the first time, SAF-HOLLAND, Haldex and Tecma presented at joint trade fair stand. SAF-HOLLAND had announced the acquisition of Tecma Srl at the start of the year. With the know-how and experience of the Italian manufacturer, SAF-HOLLAND is further expanding the development and manufacturing of customized axle systems and suspensions. The joint exhibition in Milan now also demonstrated this concentrated competence to the outside.

SAF-HOLLAND has continued to enhance the SAF INTRA air suspension system over the years: The SAF INTRA castor steering axle with VSE auxiliary steering protects the tyres and saves fuel. The Smart Steering gives the vehicle a completely new level of manoeuvrability: Commercial vehicles moving forwards or reversing in urban traffic benefit from a reliable steering angle transfer and active steering assistance at up to 25 km/h.

SAF-HOLLAND has developed the SAF TRAKr electric axle for trailers with electric units such as cooling or pumps. It lowers fuel consumption and the emissions of the overall vehicle combination. To do this, a high voltage generator unit converts the kinetic energy of the trailer into electrical energy.

The generated energy is stored in a Li-ion battery and then used to run the electrical units in the trailer, such as refrigeration units or pumps. For drivers, the purely electrical operation of the refrigeration unit provides appreciable added comfort on the road, as they are exposed to significantly lower noise emissions.

“Our stand at Transpotec Logitec had a continuous stream of visitors. The reception and great interest from the trade visitors confirm our product portfolio and encourage us to continue on this path,” summarises Cristiano Sturaro from SAF-HOLLAND Italia.
