Automechanika Shanghai opens to record number of exhibitors on its 20th birthday

AMS celebrates two decades of serving the automotive service industry as it welcomes back the domestic and international aftermarket

Shanghai welcomed the global automotive industry on a sunny Monday, marking the opening of Automechanika Shanghai (AMS), now celebrating its 20th anniversary. The bustling metropolis, home to nearly 30 million residents, set the stage for one of the world’s largest automotive trade fairs, hosted at the sprawling National Exhibition and Convention Center (NECC).

The show, which started in 2004 with 235 exhibitors across 10,000 square metres, now spans 350,000 square metres and features 6,643 exhibitors. Stephan Buurma of Messe Frankfurt highlighted the evolution of AMS:

“The show’s focus has shifted from internal combustion engines (ICE) to green mobility products, with one-third of the exhibitors now dedicated to alternative solutions. This is one of the most influential trade platforms serving the automotive industry today.”

Fiona Chiew, General Manager of Automechanika Shanghai, reflected on two decades of progress:

“China has made rapid advancements in digital services and new energy sectors over the past 20 years. This year, more than 2,000 exhibitors are showcasing innovations in smart mobility, new energy, and vehicle autonomy.”

The Numbers Behind the Growth

Since its inception, Automechanika Shanghai has grown in tandem with China’s automotive industry, which produced five million vehicles in 2004 and is projected to reach 30 million vehicles in 2024. The event has also seen a 20% increase in size compared to 2023, with 14 halls and 16 country and regional pavilions.

James Yu, General Manager of Messe Frankfurt (Shanghai), noted:

“720 small and medium enterprises (SMEs) are showcasing high-tech innovations across the entire supply chain, reflecting China’s growing role in global automotive solutions.”

Spotlight on Green and Smart Technologies

This year’s edition pivots towards sustainable and intelligent automotive solutions, with the new New Energy & Connectivity sector taking centre stage. Housing approximately 450 exhibitors across 26,000 square metres, this area showcases cutting-edge technologies in green energy and digital connectivity.

Prominent exhibitors include Accelink, Black Sesame, and CALB Group, highlighting products such as autonomous driving systems, next-generation batteries, and advanced manufacturing solutions.

The Digital Solutions/Services sector in Hall 7.2 further emphasizes advancements in cloud computing, artificial intelligence, and 5G, with leaders like CassTime and JiZhun ERP presenting innovations reshaping the supply chain.

Global Engagement and Knowledge Exchange

Automechanika Shanghai also serves as a hub for global collaboration, with 200 buying groups from China and overseas attending this year. A robust fringe programme, featuring 70 concurrent events, aims to foster knowledge sharing and industry networking.

Highlights include the International Automotive Industry Conference, which gathers experts, policymakers, and brands to discuss major trends such as electrification and digital transformation.

Reflecting on 20 Years of Progress

As Zhang Li, General Manager of China National Machinery Industry International Co. Ltd, aptly put it:

“The automotive industry is achieving remarkable milestones, and Automechanika Shanghai has kept pace with this dynamic growth.”

The event continues until December 5, showcasing the latest in automotive innovation, from components and customising to tyres and green repair solutions. As AMS celebrates two decades, it not only mirrors the industry’s transformation but also sets the stage for its sustainable future.
