Thermo King starts production of the new fully electric E-500e

The E-500e, part of the new E-Series, is designed to meet the growing demands for sustainable and efficient urban and inner-city deliveries

Thermo King has announced the start of production for its innovative E-500e models, marking a significant advancement in electric light commercial vehicle (LCV) refrigeration.

The E-500e, part of the new E-Series, is designed to meet the growing demands for sustainable and efficient urban and inner-city deliveries, says the leading provider of transport temperature control solutions.

The E-500e offers a fully electric, energy-efficient solution that pushes the boundaries of current refrigeration capabilities.

“This model reflects our commitment to innovation, sustainability, and supporting our customers through the transition to lower CO₂ emissions,” said Davide Fusciani, product manager at Thermo King. The European Union’s ambitious goal to reduce CO₂ emissions from new trucks by 90% by 2040 underscores the timeliness and relevance of the E-500e for fleet operators seeking to future-proof their operations.

Energy Efficiency and Sustainability at Its Core

The E-500e leverages advanced technology to ensure minimal impact on the electric vehicle’s battery and range, featuring custom-designed inverter technology, a patented power control system, and seamless communication with the vehicle to optimize cooling performance and energy efficiency. Powered directly by the vehicle’s battery, the E-500e eliminates the need for additional battery packs or shore connections, allowing for continuous operation even during vehicle charging or delivery stops.

Unmatched Cooling Capacity

Equipped with a state-of-the-art high-speed compressor, the E-500e delivers exceptional electric cooling capacity up to 4.5 kW and supports both cooling and heating modes, catering to a wide range of application needs. This high performance does not come at the expense of flexibility; the unit is fully compliant with various low emission zones and diesel-ban areas, ensuring unrestricted access to city centers day and night.

Designed for Operational Efficiency

The compact design of the E-500e not only facilitates installation on a variety of vehicles but also reduces the unit’s weight by half compared to legacy units, thereby minimizing its impact on the vehicle’s range and maximizing payload. This design innovation enhances operational flexibility and profitability for fleet operators.

A Step Towards a Greener Future

The introduction of the E-500e is a key component of Thermo King’s and Trane Technologies’ commitment to reducing carbon emissions and achieving their ambitious 2030 Sustainability Commitments, including the Gigaton Challenge to reduce customer greenhouse gas emissions by 1 billion metric tons. By addressing the challenges of electric LCVs and inner-city deliveries, the E-500e represents a sustainable solution that maintains high temperature control performance with minimal energy consumption.

The launch of the E-500e models is a significant milestone for Thermo King, demonstrating its leadership in providing electric solutions for refrigerated transportation and its dedication to promoting environmental sustainability in the logistics sector.
