FAMCO and Malaysia’s GML agree major double decker deal

Electric double-decker buses, although rare in Dubai, will add a distinctive feature to the city's public transport landscape

Al-Futtaim Auto & Machinery Company (FAMCO), a leading distributor of heavy vehicles and commercial mobility solutions in the UAE, has signed a major contract with Malaysia’s Gemilang Coachwork Sdn Bhd (GML) to deliver 76  double-decker Volvo buses to Dubai’s Roads and Transport Authority (RTA).

This strategic partnership will also see the provision of Volvo BZL electric buses and marks a significant expansion of Dubai’s public transportation fleet.

The deal has been celebrated at a ceremony in Johor Bahru, Malaysia, attended by the Malaysian Minister of Transport, Yang Berhormat Tuan Anthony Loke Siew Fook.

The double-decker buses, built on Volvo chassis, will feature GML’s renowned aluminium superstructure. This advanced system utilises Constellium’s Swiss Aluminium Alloy and Bolted System Bus Body Technology, known for its durability and performance, particularly in European markets.

The introduction of the buses into the pubic transport fleet of Dubai should enhance the RTA’s public transport capabilities while aligning with the city’s ambitions to provide safe, efficient, and sustainable transport options.

This partnership extends beyond double-decker buses, with GML also set to provide Volvo BZL electric buses to FAMCO, the distributor is making itself a critical contributor to Dubai’s broader Zero Emission Public Transport Strategy 2050, and helping the city’s commitment to decarbonising its transportation sector.

The agreement to also introduce electric buses dovetails with the FAMCO’s ongoing efforts to decarbonise its fleet offerings. The introduction of these buses will be a key milestone in FAMCO’s own alignment with the UAE’s Net Zero Strategy 2050, as well as forming part of a long-term strategy to take the lead in introducing green technology to the wider region’s transportation networks.

Indeed, the BZL vehicles are the latest in a series of Volvo-made electric bus, truck and machinery launches by a firm determined to take a pro-active approach to sustainable mobility.

Ramez Hamdan, Regional Managing Director of Al-Futtaim Industrial Equipment (FAMCO), highlighted the broader implications of the project, noting, “This project transcends the mere delivery of buses; it aims to enhance the entire public transport infrastructure in Dubai. At FAMCO, we believe that true innovation arises from collaboration with the best.”

Double-decker buses, although rare in Dubai, will add a distinctive feature to the city’s public transport landscape. Their increased capacity will allow for more passengers per journey, supporting the RTA’s goal of enhancing the efficiency of the public transport system.

Pang Jun Jie, Executive Director of Gemilang Coachwork, expressed his pride in the partnership, emphasising the commitment to delivering high-quality, innovative solutions to meet Dubai’s expanding transport needs.

“These 76 buses reflect our commitment to delivering high-quality, innovative transportation solutions and the trust we have established with FAMCO and our international partners,” stated Pang, addint that: “Electric buses signify our forward-thinking approach to mobility. At Gemilang, we prioritize sustainability and are proud to align our products with global green transportation initiatives,” he added.

Pang’s thoughts were echoed by Malaysia’s Minister of Transport who also highlighted the importance of this collaboration, noting that it showcases Malaysia’s growing capabilities in the global automotive sector.
