UD Trucks takes a stand against plastic pollution by joining the Plastic Pledge

"Every simple action counts. We invite other organisations and individuals to join us in this meaningful initiative and work towards a plastic-free future."

UD Trucks, a leading manufacturer of commercial vehicles, has taken a leading role in an international effort to address the global plastic pollution crisis.

From 1 June, UD Trucks formally entered a partnership with the Arabian Ocean Rowing Team, to help make a difference by reducing plastic consumption both within its organisation and on an individual level.

The Plastic Pledge Project encompasses a range of important initiatives, each designed to make a significant impact on plastic consumption – currently, at least 11 million tons of plastic enter the world’s seas every year!

The Plastic Pledge Project is in keeping with UD Trucks’ firm belief in corporate responsibility and its dedication to creating a cleaner and greener future, said the leading Japanese commercial vehicles firm.

By actively addressing the challenges posed by plastic waste, UD Trucks said it aims to set a precedent for sustainable practices within the automotive industry and inspire others to join the cause.

In order to drive change from within, UD Trucks will implement employee awareness and training programmes, ensuring that each member of the organisation understands the importance of reducing plastic waste, and actively participates in the initiative. Additionally, UD Trucks will engage with suppliers and partners to encourage them to take initiatives for sustainable packaging and plastic reduction efforts.

As part of its “Better Life” strategy for the planet, UD Trucks will organise plastic-free events and actively support recycling and waste management practices.

By forging partnerships with environmental organisations and government agencies, UD Trucks aims to create a network of like-minded individuals and entities dedicated to minimizing plastic pollution.

Mourad Hedna, President of UD Trucks MEENA, said: “Plastic pollution is a pressing global issue that requires immediate action. By joining forces, we believe we can make a significant impact and drive positive change.

“Every simple action counts. We invite other organisations and individuals to join us in this meaningful initiative and work towards a plastic-free future.”

Ahead of the announcement UD Trucks employees met with Toby Gregory, Founder and Captain of the Arabian Ocean Rowing Team, to learn more about the team’s historic achievement of rowing across the Atlantic Ocean.

Gregory’s 42-day journey, alongside two other team members, was the result of arduous training and dedication.

The UD Trucks staff enjoyed a presentation highlighting the challenges faced and later explored the actual boat used for the expedition. This experience helped inspire UD Trucks to adhere to the Plastic Pledge initiative to minimise plastic pollution.

Readers of Truck and Fleet Middle East magazine will be able to read the story of the Arabian Ocean Rowing Team exciting and arduous journey in the forthcoming June issue of the magazine.
