Dubai’s RTA records 25,000 truck violations in 2014

Dubai’s Roads and Transport Authority (RTA) last year found 14,784 light and heavy vehicles to be flouting regulations following a series of surprise checks, recording a total of 24,975 technical faults in driving standards.

The violations were detected in 3,960 site inspections at various locations, involving nearly 37,000 vehicles.

The inspections are conducted to ensure that heavy truck drivers comply with prescribed loads, and the loads are properly distributed on the loading surface of the vehicle, said Jamal Assada, Director of Monitoring & Enforcement at RTA Licensing Agency.

The inspections are also conducted to check for other factors, such as vehicle roadworthiness, validity of driving licenses and vehicle registration, as well as compliance with rules for transporting hazardous materials.

“The most frequent technical faults detected in heavy trucks last year… were: 5,711 faults relating to tires, 5,702 faults of lacking red rear light, 4,796 faults of lacking security and safety accessories, 4,402 faults relating to unclear plates, and 2,999 faults of lacking road worthiness,” Assada said.

The RTA launched three surprise inspection campaigns in 2014. The first, in August, targeted trucks and trailers, while the second focused on accessories fitted to vehicles. The third campaign ran in November, targeting vehicles in the waiting yard of Dubai’s Dragon Mart, the RTA said in a statement.
