The Dubai Municipality has unveiled dedicated walkways for ‘people of determination’ and the elderly at public beaches in the city. The pathways are said to have been built to help residents reach the sea with ease, according to a report published by WAM.
The ‘people of determination’ term has been adopted across the UAE since Q2 2017, in line with His Highness Sheikh Mohammed bin Rashid Al Maktoum, Vice President of the UAE and Ruler of Dubai’s national strategy for empowering people with disabilities.
“We have provided these facilities at Al Mamzar Creek Beach, Al Mamzar Corniche Beach, Jumeirah 2 and 3 beaches, Umm Suqeim 1 and 2 beaches,” said Engineer Alia Abdul Rahim Al Harmoudi, director of the Environment Department at Dubai Municipality.
Since the announcement was made, Dubai Municipality has taken several steps to introduce more ramps around the city, better parking facilities, as well as special playground equipment for children in wheelchairs.
Al Harmoudi added, “They are built meeting international standards in this area, facilitating the movement of wheel chairs, allowing the user to reach the water and enjoy swimming in the sea. The locations were chosen closer to the parking lots assigned to the people of determination.”
