New Kalba and Khor Fakkan roads to open in 2020, MoID says

Construction work on the Kalba Corniche and Khor Fakkan road projects is progressing at pace according to the Ministry of Infrastructure Development (MoID). The projects, which are being developed at a cost of $57m, are part of the MoID’s efforts to support and develop the road network in the east coast.

The MoID says that it is overseeing the implementation of several important central roads in the region, in line with worldwide quality and safety standards. It is said to have made significant progress in delivering the projects, which are expected to open in 2020.

The road that connects the Khalifa Bin Zayed Federal Road to the Kalba Corniche and extends to the Khatam Al Melaha Border with Oman is said to cost approximately $16.3m. It will enable the movement of traffic from Kalba to Sharjah and Dubai, without passing through the streets of Fujairah. The MoID says this will shorten travel times between cities and will reduce pressure on Fujairah’s internal roads.

The ministry said it is also implementing Phase Two of the Kalba road. The project is said to be 93% complete and is expected to open before the end of 2019. Phase Three of the Khor Fakkan road project is about 73% complete and is expected to be finished in the first quarter of 2020.

With the completion of the $41m project, Khor Fakkan’s hub network will be fully completed, the MoID notes.

The projects are being implemented sustainably and leverage modified asphalt, which lasts longer than traditional asphalt, the MoID explained. The ministry is also installing LED lighting which will reduce power consumption by 50%.
