Volvo Penta to offer electric power systems by 2021

Engine and power products specialist Volvo Penta will provide electric power solutions for both its land and marine business areas by 2021.

The Volvo Group company said that as part of this commitment, it has undertaken an organisational  restructuring to accelerate the switch towards electrified power. As part of the increased commitment to its electrification investment programme, Volvo Penta has already established an electromobility development and test laboratory at its Swedish headquarters.

“Volvo Penta is embracing the electric transformation and will be at the forefront in delivering compelling business cases to customers using this new technology,” said Björn Ingemanson, president, Volvo Penta.

“We will take a full systems supplier approach helping our customers in the transition to the new technology. This will happen application-by-application, on the basis that the business case for switching to electric will differ across our many customer segments. This is the start of a long-term transition.”

He added, however, that diesel and petrol-powered systems will remain the most appropriate power source for many applications for years to come.

Volvo Penta has kept the power outputs and applications of the initial electric systems confidential for now. However, the company has announced that it will offer both hybrid and all-electric solutions from 2021, with testing and validation already underway on prototypes.
