There are some people that would argue that the Pajero Evolution that came out ‘hot and hotted’ from Mitsubishi’s support of the Dakar Rally back around the beginning of noughties is the original Super SUV. Long before this golden era for SUVs where Porsche and Bentley can muddle about with KIA and BMW in the segment, you simply wanted an SUV because you needed space and capability.
But, then, along came the Pajero Evolution and it’s 3.5l V6 mounted on independent suspension and drivers suddenly had performance and handling – and the rest was history.
Well, not exactly. Sadly, barely a few thousand were made and the name Pajero – along with its other guises as the Montero and Shogun – has continued to be synonymous with more considered and sensible priorities for the car buyer.
However, T&FME had the pleasure of testing the Mitsubishi Montero Sport, a midsize SUV that offers a combination of rugged off-road capability and refined on-road manners, last month and for the right driver and wallet it should hit the sweet spot between their daily commute and the odd week-end adventure.
The mid-size segment is being rapidly stuffed by new competition particularly from Chinese brands such as Geely, Chery and Haval that come packed with modern features and performance to rival car-makers like Mitsubishi. However, the Montero Sport comes with its own set of temptations even as a family-friendly set of wheels, including being equipped with a robust and snorting 3.0-liter V6 engine that produces 215 horsepower and 285 lb-ft of torque – not quite the 276hp and 256 lb-ft of torque delivered by that Pajero Evolution but still mighty close when factoring in modern car design.
In fact, it is an engine which provides more than enough power for highway cruising and off-road excursions. The 8-speed automatic transmission, meanwhile, ensures smooth shifting, enhancing the driving experience. The Super Select 4WD-II system is a standout feature, offering multiple driving modes to tackle various terrains, from mud and sand to snow (!!) and rocks.
One of the Montero Sport’s strongest suits is its off-road prowess and where it is likely to score against its rivals in the Middle East. With a high ground clearance of 8.5 inches and a wading depth of 27.6 inches, it’s well-prepared for challenging terrains. The vehicle’s body-on-frame construction adds to its durability and toughness, making it a reliable choice for off-road enthusiasts. The rear differential lock also further enhances traction on slippery surfaces.
Inside, the Montero Sport offers a spacious and comfortable cabin. The materials used are of high quality, and the layout is driver-centric. The leather seats are supportive and adjustable, ensuring comfort on long drives. The third-row seating provides additional passenger capacity, though it may be a bit tight for adults on longer journeys. The cargo space is ample, and with the third row folded down, it becomes even more generous.
The Montero Sport also comes equipped with a range of modern technology features. The infotainment system includes an 8-inch touchscreen with Apple CarPlay and Android Auto compatibility, allowing seamless smartphone integration. The 360-degree camera system is particularly useful for navigating tight spots and enhancing overall safety. Additional features include keyless entry, push-button start, and a multi-zone climate control system.
Safety is a key consideration for any family-oriented SUV, and the Montero Sport doesn’t disappoint. It includes advanced safety features such as adaptive cruise control, blind-spot monitoring, lane de-parture warning, and forward collision mitigation. The robust build quality and multiple airbags pro-vide an added layer of protection in the event of a collision.
While the Montero Sport excels in many areas, its fuel efficiency is average for its class. It offers around 7.2 km/l in the city and 9.8 km/l on the highway. This is decent for a vehicle with such strong performance and off-road capabilities but may be a consideration for those prioritising fuel economy.
VERDICT
The Mitsubishi Montero Sport is a well-rounded SUV that excels in versatility, offering a balance of performance, comfort, and off-road capability. It’s a great choice for families and adventure seekers alike, providing a reliable and enjoyable driving experience both on and off the road. While it may not be the most fuel-efficient option in its class, its strengths in other areas make it a compelling choice for those in need of a robust and versatile vehicle.
