Automechanika Dubai 2024, the Middle East’s largest event for the automotive aftermarket industry, has put a spotlight on the importance of diversity and inclusion in the automotive sector. During the event’s opening day, industry leaders shared insights on how the adoption of electric vehicles (EVs), artificial intelligence (AI), and adaptive technologies is driving a cultural shift towards greater inclusivity in the industry.
The session, Promoting Diversity and Inclusion in the Automotive Industry, held as part of the Automechanika Academy, brought together prominent female leaders to discuss the evolving dynamics of the sector.
The panel, moderated by mobility expert Dr. Maya Ben Dror, included trailblazers such as:
- Shubra Srivastava, CEO & Founder of GaragePlug Inc.
- Sara Rachid, Head of Automotive and Technology Verticals – UAE, Oman, and Qatar, Maersk
- Bhavika Sachdeva, Director, Trinity Lubes and Grease FZC
- Gaitri Jeswani, COO, Eurodiesel Services LLC
Speaking at the session, Sara Rachid highlighted the progress being made: “Companies are adapting and ensuring women are empowered. At Maersk, 35% of executive leadership roles are held by women, and we aim to reach 40%. The change is real and becoming part of the company’s DNA. Driving this agenda forward is crucial to staying relevant in the market and connecting with our customers.”
Technology as a Catalyst for Inclusivity
The panel also discussed how electrification and emerging technologies are creating opportunities for women to enter traditionally male-dominated roles. Gaitri Jeswani noted:
“With electrification coming in, we’re seeing more women participating in Science, Technology, Engineering, and Mathematics (STEM) programs. This education is enabling them to engage with and contribute to the newer technologies reshaping the automotive industry.”
The session highlighted a report by the Economic Times showing that female workers in India’s automakers, such as Tata Motors and MG Motor India, are increasing in number thanks to advanced technologies and active hiring strategies.
Driving Change Through Dialogue
Mahmut Gazi Bilikozen, Portfolio Director at Messe Frankfurt Middle East, organiser of Automechanika Dubai, underscored the event’s focus on inclusivity:
“This year, we placed a renewed emphasis on diversity and inclusion at the Automechanika Academy, recognising the vital role these values play in shaping a forward-thinking industry. Through insights from thought leaders, we are addressing pivotal trends such as the integration of women in leadership, adaptive technologies, and inclusive strategies that drive innovation and resilience.”
