Erich Kuss, Director of the American Institute in Taiwan (AIT), delivered a keynote speech at the opening of the Taiwan International Automobile & Motorcycle Parts & Accessories Show (AMPA 2025), reaffirming the strategic importance of U.S.-Taiwan cooperation in the rapidly evolving automotive sector.
Speaking to a packed audience of industry leaders and media, Kuss commended Taiwan’s role as a global powerhouse in the advancement of vehicle technologies, with notable strengths in electric vehicles (EVs), components, artificial intelligence, and autonomous driving systems.
“Taiwan is a global leader in advancing the automotive industry, particularly through vehicles, components, technologies, AI, and autonomous vehicle systems,” Kuss said. “Its world-class manufacturing capabilities are integral to the success of both EV startups and traditional automakers, enhancing global supply chains and innovation.”
While the Trump administration has imposed 25% tariffs on auto parts, its chip exports, vital to advance technology such as AI and EV systems, are exempt. Kuss highlighted the mutual economic benefits that arise from this collaboration, referencing key investments such as TSMC’s semiconductor plant in Arizona and drivetrain manufacturer HOTA’s expansion in New Mexico, while also pointing to the growing presence of U.S. firms in Taiwan.
“Together, we can leverage AI and autonomy to create smarter, more efficient vehicles, while advancing energy efficiency to power these innovations sustainably,” he said. “This collaboration drives mutual prosperity.”
He emphasised that under President Donald Trump’s current administration, revitalising the American automotive industry remains a priority. “We’re actively encouraging foreign direct investment in the automotive sector as a key focus. We see tremendous opportunity for Taiwanese companies to partner with us in this growth.”
Kuss also drew attention to the strong presence of U.S. states at this year’s show, with representatives from Arizona, Michigan, New Mexico, North Carolina, South Carolina, Texas, Virginia, and West Virginia all participating under the USA Pavilion. These regions, he said, offer “cutting-edge infrastructure and innovation-friendly environments for international firms.”
Encouraging continued dialogue and investment, Kuss extended an invitation to attendees to join the upcoming SelectUSA Investment Summit in Washington, D.C., from May 11th to 14th—a premier event aimed at fostering cross-border investment and collaboration.
“Let’s work hand in hand to shape the future, where AI collaboration and partnership between the United States and Taiwan drive progress for all of us,” he concluded. “I wish you all the greatest success at the show.”
