Dubai’s Roads and Transport Authority (RTA) has announced that its public bus fleet has achieved a global benchmark, with individual buses exceeding a cumulative distance of two million kilometres while remaining in continuous service for 18 years.
The milestone underscores the effectiveness of the RTA’s strategy to maximise asset use and implement circular economy principles, alongside rigorous preventive and operational maintenance programmes. Together, these measures have enabled the fleet to operate well beyond its expected lifespan without compromising efficiency.
According to the authority, this performance surpasses that of comparable systems in major cities worldwide. Public buses in London and Singapore typically record distances of around 1.3 million and 1.4 million kilometres respectively, placing Dubai’s results significantly ahead.
Operational performance has also remained strong. In 2025, the fleet achieved an availability rate exceeding 93 per cent, while maintaining a notably low fault rate by international standards. The RTA attributes this to carefully managed maintenance systems and consistent monitoring of vehicle performance.
Officials say the achievement is not merely statistical but reflects a broader vision to build a smart and sustainable transport network. By combining advanced technology with efficient operations, the RTA has been able to deliver reliable services while supporting Dubai’s wider ambitions for innovation and quality of life.
The extended lifespan of the buses carries environmental and financial benefits. Keeping vehicles in service for longer reduces waste associated with manufacturing and disposal, contributing to sustainability targets. At the same time, it allows the authority to defer major capital expenditure on fleet replacement, generating substantial cost savings.
The RTA added that the milestone reflects the efforts of specialised teams working to high standards of quality and performance. Their work has helped position Dubai as a leading city for modern, efficient public transport.
Ultimately, the record reinforces Dubai’s commitment to developing innovative mobility solutions that enhance passenger experience while advancing sustainability and operational excellence across the emirate.
