General Motors (GM) Middle East claims it is close to adding its pioneering hands-free driving technology, Super Cruise, to the industry’s broadest electric vehicle (EV) line-up in the region.
Positioning itself at the forefront of the region’s transformation towards smart and sustainable mobility, GM announced that it is the first automotive manufacturer in the Middle East to complete digital LiDAR road-mapping — an essential requirement for enabling Super Cruise — in Kuwait, Oman and Bahrain.
The rollout of this technology places GM at the centre of the region’s personal autonomous vehicle (PAV) future, offering connected and safe mobility solutions across both electric and internal combustion engine (ICE) vehicles.
Super Cruise, GM’s flagship advanced driver assistance system (ADAS), allows true hands-free driving on compatible roads. Powered by OnStar connectivity, the system utilises high-definition maps, GPS, cameras, radars and LiDAR to keep vehicles centred within their lanes and is uniquely equipped to support hands-free trailering—ideal for the GCC’s adventure-minded drivers. It is expected to become available across a significant portion of GM’s upcoming 2026 models.
Jack Uppal, President and Managing Director of GM Africa and Middle East, said the developments mark a critical moment in GM’s long-standing regional journey: “This year, we are delivering on our promise and vision of Zero Crashes, Zero Emissions, Zero Congestion with software at the heart of our future. We’re accelerating our electric vehicle rollout with new models arriving at an impressive pace empowered by innovative battery platforms that enable an unparalleled customer experience when coupled with connected services.”
The automotive giant’s electric vehicle roadmap for the Middle East spans all segments—from affordable compact crossovers to ultra-luxury SUVs. Key upcoming launches include the entry-level Chevrolet Spark EUV, the versatile Equinox EV, and Cadillac’s expanding EV range including the OPTIQ, LYRIQ, VISTIQ, ESCALADE IQ and ESCALADE IQL. This portfolio reflects GM’s “EV for every wallet” approach, catering to diverse market segments while bridging the transition between ICE and EV propulsion.
Uppal added: “This is our goal toward zero tailpipe emissions as well as zero crashes as we bring technologies that reduce human error, thereby, preventing road accidents. Together, with our industry-first true hands-free Super Cruise technology, we are envisioning a future where our roads and vehicles are much safer, and cities are less congested to give customers back precious time. In the meantime, our ICE and electric vehicles will coexist, because our customers will ultimately define the pace of the transition. Now more than ever, we are committed to building and bringing world-class products our customers love, honoring our 99 years legacy in this region.”
Alongside its product strategy, GM is placing heavy emphasis on customer experience. Many of its next-generation EVs will be equipped with home charging units and smart energy features that allow drivers to monitor battery levels, issue stop-charge commands, and locate charging stations through their mobile apps. These features aim to make the transition to electric driving seamless and user-friendly.
Luis De La Cruz, Managing Director of OnStar and Digital Services at GM Africa and Middle East, noted: “With the introduction of Super Cruise, we are taking a significant step toward personally autonomous vehicle driving. Our technology roadmap not only improves road safety but aligns with national visions for smart mobility. We’ve completed Super Cruise mapping in Kuwait, Oman and Bahrain, and are actively expanding to other connected countries in the region.”
As GM marks its 99th year in the Middle East, it has launched the #ZeroLimits campaign—a regional initiative designed to engage and educate communities about the practical realities of tomorrow’s mobility. Featuring expert-led discussions, local insights and real-world demonstrations, the campaign underscores GM’s commitment to inclusive innovation and a more sustainable transport future.
The company is also working closely with governments and regulatory bodies to help shape EV infrastructure and smart mobility frameworks. Through partnerships, pilot projects, and turnkey EV charging solutions, GM aims to support the region’s electrification goals and contribute to policies that foster innovation and road safety.
