Riyadh Metro project 75% complete

Work is progressing steadily on the Riyadh Metro development, and the mega project is now said to be 75% complete, according to a report by the Saudi Gazette. The metro is scheduled to begin light operations in 2019, with full operations scheduled for 2021.

The project consists of six metro lines, 85 stations and will span a total distance of 176km. Construction work began in Q2, 2014 and the project is expected to serve some 3.6m passengers per day once it is fully operational.

Speaking after chairing the Arriyadh Development Authority meeting, Riyadh Emir Prince Faisal Bin Bandar said that work is progressing at 250 sites across the metro network.

Prince Faisal, who is also the chairman of the board of directors of Arriyadh Development Authority and chairman of the supreme committee for supervision of the King Abdul Aziz Public Transport Project in Riyadh, also said that he was pleased that the coaches for the Riyadh bus project have been received. The Prince was briefed on the project and the services available for Riyadh residents in the coming year, the report said.

The meeting also saw contracts awarded for the operation, maintenance and linking of telecom networks in the Riyadh buses project for a period of 10 years.
