Aftermarket: How does your lubrication of choice affect your bearing life expectancy?

It’s quite popular among aftermarket professionals to say that your lubrication strategy can either break or make your business. Recent study could attest that 60% of most bearing failure cases are proven to be tied with improper lubrication practices.

Bearings, as a very popular rolling element that power automotive and industrial aftermarket businesses are highly reliant on lubrication to reduce applications’ level of friction. As industries that are constantly exposed to extreme pressure and constant friction, your lubrication game could substantially affect your application’s overall performance.

Mineral Circles’ in-house engineers who have been constantly servicing the industrial sectors within the UAE have been consistently encountering the same improper lubrication techniques that affect their overall business and service performance. As shared by MCB’s engineers, by avoiding common lubrication practices, businesses can fully optimise services that could save them from hefty charges of maintenance and repair services.

Choosing the appropriate grease type varies from one application to another. Operating conditions, speed, temperature, and chemical composition are just a few of the important things that need to be considered in choosing what’s the right fit for your application.

Leading lubrication manufacturer such as NTN SNR has formulated a set of grease types that are apt based on your application’s specific requirement. NTN SNR’s EP3 Heavy Duty grease, for example, is lauded for its special formulation which makes it highly suitable for heavy-duty applications. It’s NLGI grade 3 consistency paired with its lithium soap (thickener) allows it to bind well with mineral oil making the grease more resistant to speed, heavy load, and high temperatures.

Lubrication is more on precision. Overdoing it or supplying less than what it should have could cause detrimental results for your bearings or your whole application. Under-lubricating your components increase the chance of premature failure and higher energy usage thereby, resulting in operating or maintenance costs.

On the other hand, oversupplying grease is just as harmful. Lodging too much more than what’s needed builds pressure within your application. Too much pressure doesn’t allow your components to move at a certain speed it needs due to grease-clogging thereby, contributing to temperature build-up that generally affects your application’s performance.

Avoid manual lubrication techniques and opt for automatic lubricator

Automating the lubrication process doesn’t only save you time and cost from additional maintenance services. Manual lubrication accounts for almost 76% of bearing failure as it usually results in inadequate lubrication and poses a strong possibility of contamination. Automatic lubricators don’t require manual work as it’s designed to pump in an adequate amount of lubricants at needed intervals. Utilizing such available resources could substantially save your business from committing errors that stem from manual overriding.

Utilizing available resources from trusted global manufacturers such as NTN SNRSKF, and MCB brands could substantially optimize your operation by deploying research-based, precise, and state-of-the-art industry solutions to your current business model.

As industrialization is consistently mounting the ever-changing demand in the aftermarket industry, it’s better to invest in the available, modern methodologies. It’s more practical to bank on premium quality tools and components that deliver guaranteed optimum results rather than squandering a hefty amount of money for maintenance and repair services cost for choosing affordable yet mediocre alternatives.
