RTA opens key bridge connecting Hessa Street to Al Khail Road

Bridge significantly improves traffic flow, reducing travel time between the two key routes from 15 minutes to just 3 minutes

Dubai’s Roads and Transport Authority (RTA) has unveiled a major milestone in the Hessa Street development project: a 1,000-metre, two-lane bridge connecting Hessa Street to Al Khail Road.

The bridge significantly improves traffic flow, reducing travel time between the two key routes from 15 minutes to just 3 minutes.

The bridge forms part of the broader Hessa Street development project, of which 54% has been completed. The AED 689 million initiative aims to enhance Dubai’s road infrastructure, aligning with the Emirate’s urban growth and population expansion. All works, including upgrades to four major intersections, are slated for completion by the fourth quarter of 2025.

Mattar Al Tayer, Director General and Chairman of the Board of Executive Directors of RTA, highlighted the project’s significance, stating, “The Hessa Street development project spans 4.5 km from Sheikh Zayed Road to Al Khail Road and reflects the directives of His Highness Sheikh Mohammed bin Rashid Al Maktoum. It is a vital step in meeting Dubai’s infrastructural and developmental demands.”

The project includes:

  • Upgrading four intersections: Sheikh Zayed Road, First Al Khail Road, Al Asayel Street, and Al Khail Road.
  • Widening Hessa Street from two lanes to four lanes in each direction, doubling its capacity to handle up to 16,000 vehicles per hour.
  • Constructing 13.5 km of cycling and e-scooter tracks, promoting sustainable mobility and linking key residential areas.

Key Intersection Enhancements

The Hessa Street project includes major improvements to the following intersections:

  1. Sheikh Zayed Road: A two-lane ramp will facilitate seamless right-turn traffic toward Emirates Road, passing over the Dubai Metro Red Line.
  2. First Al Khail Road: Existing bridge lanes will increase from three to four in each direction, with additional improvements to the surface-level junction.
  3. Al Asayel Street: The bridge will be expanded from two to four lanes in each direction, alongside upgrades to the signalised intersection.
  4. Al Khail Road: A two-lane ramp will ensure direct traffic flow northbound toward Sharjah.

Cycling and E-Scooter Infrastructure

The project also prioritises sustainable travel with 13.5 km of cycling and e-scooter tracks. These tracks enhance connectivity between key residential areas, including Al Barsha and Dubai Hills, and improve accessibility to Dubai Internet City Metro Station.

Two architecturally distinctive bridges, designed for both cyclists and pedestrians, are a highlight of the project. Spanning Sheikh Zayed Road and Al Khail Road, the five-metre-wide bridges include dedicated lanes for cycling and walking, with an estimated capacity of 5,200 users per hour.

The development aims to provide seamless first and last-mile connectivity, boosting accessibility to metro stations, commercial hubs, and service centres across the region.

With the opening of this key bridge, Dubai’s RTA continues to reinforce the city’s position as a leader in smart, sustainable urban mobility.
